My first and last ski climb this season.

Back from NY, i have to get fit again. Hard to do it!!!

On Friday we slept bivouaking at Plan de Senarta. But it is a well known place so I couldn’t sleep that much because every half hour there was a car coming in or leaving. I couldn’t understand…some people getting in at 2am and others leaving at 3am. They’re when they say Spaniards have crazy schedules…

I will not sleep there again unless there is a crazy storm coming and I need shelter!

With some sleep, Dani, Fran, David and myself left Senarta heading to la Besurta. You can get there by car (except on summer) and it is a crowded place of all the people that want to climb Aneto, the highest peak in the Pyrenees. We climb up by foot and with heavy backpacks to Paderna lakes, over the Renclusa hut. We mount our tents and leave around 9am to climb Pico de Alba (10230 ft).

Snow appears quite high, around 7500-7800 ft. And I feel my lack of fit. From 8200 ft on I feel lack of oxygen!! never had that feeling before unless getting to the top of Montblanc. My body is taking revenge for being six months in NY at 0 ft altitude. I am slowing down the group and that makes me mad, but I cannot go faster. Once at the bottom of the couloir that gets to the summit at 9700 ft I stop my journey and let them go up without me. In fact, I climbed this summit last year and I prefer to save some energy for the day after.

It is too late and we ski down with snow really melted. In addition to the bad snow we have an afternoon storm threatening us.

First rain drops once at the lakes so we run carrying our skis to our tents shelter. Happily few minutes before it starts pourring!! what a pleasure to be inside the tent hearing the rain noise, with all our climbing gear away from us so that we don’t risk that much to be caught by some lightning. Perfect moment for a siesta!!!

In US everybody was asking me if we were doing siesta all the time, and I spent all days denying…well but some times WE DO, ok???!!!

After that the sky got clear again and we saw and incredible rainbow.

Fran, a strong guy from Asturias, took a bath in the cold lake…fed by water falling directly from melted snow. So freezing cold!! he had a hard time to get warm again, of course!

Arco Iris

On Sunday we started with the idea of climbing Aneto through the Estasen couloir, which is a very long route as you have to cross to another valley through Coronas pass then climb up Estasen couloir to Aneto summit. Ski down the couloir if feasible and come all the way back. We left at 6am when snow was still hardpacked. We had an accident with no consequences due to a slid down the slope and wasted some time, in addition to my slow pace. So at this time we discarded our original plan and decided to go for Maladeta summit (10853 ft). Dani already climbed this summit and decides to go for a minor summit around.

Maladeta has a couloir to go to summit and I get to the bottom again with breath issues…again having trouble over 8200 ft. But I am determined to get to the summit because Maladeta is in my ToDo list 😉

We eat something to restore energy and go up. The couloir has around 240 to 300 ft with some steps made by all the climbers passing. It is not that steep so we get up there easily. It is more difficult to me to get from the couloir exit to the summit. What an unfit guy 😛

But it is a very happy moment…first summit after my return to Barcelona!!

Rest of the journey is the normal stuff…unmount tents, relax under the sun, walking down to Besurta, etc.

Well, really a pleasure to step in the Pyrenees again 🙂
